Help on FSL's Precipitation Display

Instructions

Select a data set to load, and click the 'Load data' button. You can select a new data set at any time; it will overwrite the previous data. (At present, you can only select one 24 hr period at a time.)

Symbols on the map indicate what kind of reports we received from each station.

Move the mouse over the map to see the geographic coordinates, the station name and description, and daily total precipitation under the cursor, and for stations in the hourly data stream, the number of hours that the station reported.

Drag (move the mouse while holding down button 1) to choose an area in which to zoom. (The zoom will occur as soon as the mouse button is released.) You can move the zoomed region by using the overview window, and you can un-zoom by clicking the Unzoom button.

Click with mouse button 1 on any HADS station to see a time-series of rain (inches) vs. time (hrs) in a separate window. (Close individual time-series windows in the normal way, or use the applet's "Close TS" button to close all of them.)

Choose to display precipitation values, counties and/or rivers by clicking the appropriate buttons. It may take a few minutes for these to load. (Image rendering is faster when fewer lines are displayed, so you may wish to only display these after you have zoomed in.)

Click on the color bar to hide all data except those corresponding to the color you have selected. The other colors will be x-ed out on the color bar. Or, click and drag on the color bar to show only a range of data. Click on any non-x-ed out color on the color bar to show all data again.

Use the Show only: Hourly button to show stations that reported in the HADS data stream. Use the Show only: Daily button to show stations that reported in the daily data stream. Depressing both buttons will show only those stations that appeared in both data streams.

In the time-series window, move the mouse across the histogram to reveal individual values. Drag the mouse across a time range to generate precipitation sub-totals.
